some times considered to being the 'final frontier' of brewing knowlege, water adjustment for brewing has been proven to really bring out the best flavours from the yeast, hops, and malts chosen for specific beer types. by this of course, i mean paying attention to the ingredient that many overlook, and which also constitutes the largest percentage of any recipe - water! i typically use about 32L of water to make a 23L batch of beer so after doing some research about the anions and cations in water, and how each one relates to the overall beer flavour and quality, have decided to try my luck!
this will definitely be a big work in progress, and i don't expect to be perfect at it straight away, but from now on i'll be using salts such as: calcium sulphate, magnesium sulphate, calcium chloride, calcium carbonate, baking soda, canning salt, and phosphoric acid to alter and tweak the tastes of my beers for the better (as many breweries do).
the first beer i've 'test-batched' it on was a big ipa (why not!?). it was a re-make of my homeslice ipa which i absolutely loved. since it was made on easter will be once-off renamed to the 'bunny hops' ipa. many thanks to my good mate yvanna for thinking of it! thank you to everyone in my facebook feed for giving me some AMAZING suggestions also and it would take too long to type everyone's name but again, thank you!
i'll be posting some updates soon and give the beer it's official page in my 'past brews' like normal, so stay tuned you sexy people!
