since i've never done them before, i've decided that i'm going to be smashing out some sexy lagers.
for those who don't know, there are generally two types of beers - ales and lagers. brewing ales is usually the easiest as the ale yeast ferment all the sugars at more ambient temperatures (18-20C), but lager yeasts commonly require much colder temperatures (9-12C) which help give it that unique crispness. additionally, they require a much longer time to 'lager' (cold store) so that the flavours can blend and mature into a very balanced and crisp beer.
i've found myself enjoying lagers more recently, so i thought to try and brew some to enjoy over the hotter summer months and even into autumn. i have used a fermentation fridge for so long to keep my ales at the preferred temperatures, and now i'll be using them at much colder temperatures for my lagers. there are many methods of speeding up this process too which i'll be using.
i'll be brewing up some very simple lager recipes first to get a feel for brewing them, then might expand into some different, more unique recipes depending on how adventurous i'm feeling. my beer to celebrate my son Miles' birth last month will be a lager also. i'm very excited to say the least! keep an eye on the site to check out the recipes.
